In the previous post, I mentioned that the airline industry was suffering. In this new article, United Airlines will cut 950 pilots in the near future. They will cut a total of 1600 salaried jobs. In order to deal with insane prices, they are forced to cut workers. They are even starting to charge to check luggage. Will the airline be able to survive and how long?
Airlines suffering from fuel costs
24 06 2008One major industry that is really hurting from the high fuel costs is the airline. There were several airlines that had already filed for bankruptcy in the past few years, before the increased price in oil. If airlines go out of business, it can hurt the economy. It would cause thousands of job losses. Even though it is mentioned in this article that the airline has enough liquid to survive this year, it is not unlikely that some airlines will soon run out of business after a year. Think about the goods that are transported by planes and all the people that need to travel to do business. It would not be pretty if airlines went out of business.

Like the family shown here, who gave up visiting their grandmothers, had to change their habits in order to cope with the high prices. What can a family like this do to help themselves cope with the costs, but not give up visiting family or taking family trips?

Online lags prices at pump
9 06 2008As gas prices are increasing everyday, it is important to know which gas stations offer the cheapest gas, and the best way to get that information is to go online. But wait… the prices shown on the internet and the actual prices don’t match. How are we suppose to keep track of cheap gas? There was a recent article about this problem and you can click the link to see the full story. Automotive.com, a site that promoted itself on CNN, mostly had inaccurate prices. Even Gasbuddy.com, a site that relies on volunteers, had inaccurate prices because of rapid price changes. With gas prices changing so fast, maybe even a few times a day, it is impossible to keep track of cheap gas, even with reliable reports. Is there nothing that can be done? Are we stuck with inaccurate prices?
